McPherson Bullpups take down Buhler Crusaders

The McPherson Bullpups took on the red-hot Buhler Crusaders on Friday night at McPherson Stadium in an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League game. The Bullpups held on for a 21-14 win. McPherson started the game off fast with a sixty-seven-yard connection from Kaleb Hoppes to Aaron Powell for the initial touchdown. The Bullpups fast first strike didn’t lead to an avalanche of points, however, as the Bullpups didn’t score again in the first half. Coach Jace Pavlovich must have given a “Win one for the Gipper” style speech at halftime because the Bulldogs ripped off two touchdowns unanswered in the third quarter. The first was a beautiful, twenty-five-yard pitch and catch from Hoppes to Powell, for their second touchdowns of the day, the second was a nice twenty-five yard run from Jakob Feil. With the Bulldogs up 21-0 the game looked to be over, the McPherson defense is lauded for its stoutness, but the Crusaders mustered up a late-game rally. They scored 14 unanswered points and inspired a fair amount of sweat on the McPherson faithful’s brows. McPherson’s defense held in the end in no small part due to a game-sealing interception from Kaleb Hoppes.

The Bullpups are now 5-0, but this game proves that they are far from perfect. There are three games left on the season, each should be a measuring stick for postseason performance. This Friday, the Bullpups face the Augusta Orioles, who are 2-3.
