Chairman of the McPherson Area Veterans Committee Dan Hervey, released details for Veterans Day activities to be held in McPherson on Nov. 11. The day will begin with a free breakfast sponsored by Kindred Hospice for veterans and guest at the Legion Hall from 8 to 10 a.m. Reservations should be called in to 620-245-0891. The American Legion will have a special museum display of various military items from the collection of Dennis Brown.
Weather permitting, a parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. in front of the American Legion and proceed down Main to Marlin Streets to Walnut to Woodside to Mulberry Streets and end at the Park Department Building (old National Guard Armory). A ceremony inside the old drill hall will follow the parade at 11 a.m. KNGL/KBBE radio will broadcast the ceremony live for those unable to attend.
The keynote speakers will be Lt. Col. Zach Mills U.S. Army Reserve. Mills served at various duty stations stateside as a Veterinarian and deployed with the 432nd Civil Affairs Battalion to Iraq where he authored the Multi-National Division-Baghdad Joint Common Plan for Animal Health and Agriculture.
The invocation will be given by American Legion Post No. 24 Chaplin Carl Kasey. Other activities include the National Anthem by McPherson High School Band, Amazing Grace by Lonny Liljegren, Rifle Salute by VFW Post No. 2715, and Taps played by Mark Casebeer.
Immediately following the ceremony everyone is invited to stay for a free chili luncheon sponsored by Dan and Sue Hervey, Wendy’s, and Trinity Lutheran Church. At 7 p.m. there will be a potluck dinner at the American Legion Post for veterans and family. All you need to bring this year is your appetite.
All McPherson area churches are asked to recognize their veterans in attendance and those currently on active duty during their worship service on Nov. 10.
