The main purpose of yellow center lines on a roadway is to separate traffic driving in opposite directions, thus making travel on the main streets and roadways safer. When solid double yellow lines are in the center of the roadway, drivers are not allowed to pass a vehicle in front of them. When solid and broken yellow lines are in the center of the roadway, the driver on the side with the solid yellow line may not pass other vehicles in front of them. The driver on the side with the broken yellow line may pass vehicles in front of them when it is safe to do so.
Some roadways are not marked with center lines at all. Drivers may pass vehicles in front of them when it is safe to do so, and may also cross the center of the roadway to pass vehicles parked along the right side of the street. If a vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, the driver wishing to pass the parked vehicle must yield right of way to the approaching vehicle before passing the parked car.
For your safety, your passengers’ safety, and the safety of other motorists, please be aware of the traffic laws pertaining center lines and driving left of center.
