The McPherson Bullpups have a stout test this Friday against the Arkansas City Bulldogs in the sectional finals. The game will be played at McPherson Stadium at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs started the season extremely slowly going 0-4, including being blanked three times by Goddard, Wichita South, and Goddard Eisenhower. However, they’ve rebounded lately. They blew out Ulysses 55-17, the 5th seed in the western bracket, and took care of Winfield 13-3. Their record on the year is 4-6.
This is a dangerous game especially because of the emotional win last week against Goddard. The specter of a let-down game looms after such a draining win. The Bullpups also do not want to get caught flat-footed because they’re looking ahead at a possible Andover Central or Buhler match-up in the next round.
The Bulldogs are definitely looking to “slay the giant” Friday night. The Bullpups are 10-0 on the year. Last Friday was probably their most competitive game of the year to date. They might be locked into another close gridiron battle this Friday.
The Bullpups couldn’t get their star running-back Jakob Feil going last week so look for that to be a point of emphasis. Cody Stufflebean was unblockable, and uncoverable last Friday, I expect nothing less from the K-State commit this Friday. Kaleb Hoppes has been mostly sharp this postseason and gritted out a win on a bum leg last week. The defense has also performed exceedingly well all season, and through the first two rounds of the playoffs. I think McPherson wins in a game that is closer than the final score will indicate, 38-21.
