MMS Girls Basketball

The McPherson Lady Bullpups basketball teams were both victorious on Tuesday night. The A-team won by a score of 39-23 over Newton. Karter Alvord, Jayla McLeod, and Alex Romero led the team with 8 points apiece.

Coach T.J. Jackson wasn’t satisfied with the effort, “Overall we played well enough to win, but our girls are extremely competitive and know there was much more we could have done to make that game a wider margin. We had flashes of doing things really well in all parts of the game. We know we need to improve our rebounding on both ends, our help defense suffered tonight at times, and our shots just weren’t falling at times.”

He did praise how his team passed the ball, “I love that we had 8 girls score and overall had a balance of scoring. We scored on fast breaks and through our plays. We had a couple girls who get a large amount of B team time get into the game and show they are going to be very solid for us. We weren’t sure what our depth was going to look like overall and we are happy to see we have girls coming off the bench who are going to have quite a bit to offer.”. The A-team’s record is now 2-0.

The B team beat Newton by 34, 44-10. Kaya Lowery led the team in scoring with 10 points, Jayla McLeod and Bentley Smith both dropped in 8. Coach Ellie Wingert enthused about her team’s performance, “They continued to hustle and play great defense, even when they were tired.  We made some simple mistakes running through some of our plays, but these will come with more practice.  The effort they gave, was encouraging, and every girl contributed to this game tonight!  I’m proud of how they played and excited to start the season the way they did!”.  The B-team’s record is now 1-0.

The 7th Grade girls A-Team lost to Newton, 32-20. Cora Pavlovich led the team with 8 points. Coach Melissa Wade said, “Overall, we did not get the win that we would have hoped for, but the girls did great things to get the score that we earned.  We had open shots that were inches from sinking in, resulting in our fall.  The girls hustled and gave effort the entire game, even when they were tired. We have some things to refine in practice. I am proud of their effort and attitude.”

The B-team beat Newton 18-9. Reese Buchman led the team with 5 points. Coach Wade said after the game, “With a group this size, the girls had a lot of playing tie and took advantage of the opportunity.  Even when tired, they played great defense and constantly hustled. I’m proud of their effort and attitude.”
