It is still a work in progress for Head Coach Doug Kretzer and his McPherson High School boys wrestling team, but on Thursday evening, the Bullpups made a clean sweep in their double dual match with Chapman and Smoky Valley High School.

Because the majority of the matches ended in forfeits by both Chapman and Smoky Valley, due to the lack of depth from both schools, the Bullpups were ahead from the start, defeating the Fighting Irish 71-9 and 66-15 over the Vikings.

“I thought we were kind of rusty,”  Kretzer said.“We haven’t had much of a chance to wrestle yet. We had about the same turnout last week with El Dorado with a bunch of opens. It’s hard to get everybody going.”

Some of the top performers include Devin Frantz at 160 who won both his matches by pin. Landon Frantz was also victorious in both his matches in the 195-pound weight class. One of the best matches of the night was Kourtney Craig and Dax Hopp of Smoky Valley at 182. As Craig gathered points from his escapes, Hopp at the last minute took down Kraig, 3-2.

“We have a good team nucleus,” Kretzer said. “The guys and the girls are all pulling for each other. That’s the stuff that’s sometimes hard to coach. If you get that part figured out, you get the train rolling and everything comes together. We’re a solid team.”

The Bullpups will now focus on their weekend tournament at Colby High School, where they have some heavy competition from schools in Colorado and Nebraska area. The tournament will begin at 2 p.m. and conclude on Saturday at 8 a.m. The McPherson girls will be at Great Bend on Saturday.
