Bullpup wrestlers finish second in Colby Tournament
By Sports Editor Peter Holland Jr.
COLBY—The McPherson High School boys wrestling team made quite an impression at the Colby Invitational over the weekend. Enough for the Bullpups to fight their way to the Championship round on Saturday.
“We had a great tournament,” Head Coach Doug Kretzer said. “I’m really proud of the team and how we competed. Great team effort. Big win’s versus Wray Colorado and Colby. Lost a heartbreaker against Dodge City.”
The Bullpups ran through their team opponents from the Colorado and Nebraska area, finishing 6-1 in the tournament. However, the streak ended in the finals where they fall to Dodge City High School, 48-24, earning the Bullpups a second-place finish.
Landon Frantz, at 195, won the Outstanding Wrestler award for not only going undefeated at 7-0, but he also pinned both the No. 1 ranked wrestler in Class 3A and 5A. Jonah Clarke (170) and Mason Thrash (220) also went undefeated in their weight class. Treyton Pelnar, (106), Rhett Edmonson (145) and Kourtney Craig (182) finished 6-1 in their matches.
“Outstanding performances by Landon Frantz, Jonah Clarke, and Mason Thrash who won all their bouts,” Kretzer said. “Hopefully, we can carry the momentum through this week against Augusta on Thursday and into the Abilene Tournament on Saturday.”
