On Dec. 23 some of the McPherson Community Interact Club members delivered all of the blankets they collected through our winter blanket drive to The International Rescue Committee in Wichita. These blankets will be given to refugee families who have been relocated to Wichita. The entire back half of one suburban was full of blankets with some spillover into another vehicle.
“Thank you to everyone in the McPherson community who donated,” said McPherson High School’s Erica Shook. “Your thoughtfulness is appreciated.”
The IRC’s Megan Webb gave the group a tour while they were there and discussed some of the services they provide to families.
“Two of our big takeaways from today were ‘No one chooses to be a refugee. One becomes a refugee by surviving something horrific,'” Shook said. “‘If you see someone being discriminated against, speak up. Everyone should feel welcome here.'”
The McPherson Community Interact Club is accepting new members. If you know of students in grades 8-12 who are passionate about involvement with both their local and global communities and who want to improve their leadership skills, they can contact club sponsors Erica Shook at email@example.com or Rebecca Pflughoeft at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
