KANSAS CITY, KS. — There is a reason why the Piper High School boys basketball team is the No. 1 team in the Class 4A.
A third-quarter breakdown gave the McPherson High School boys basketball team a 77-59 loss in the grand finale of the 810 Varsity Showcase, dropping the Bullpups to 4-3 on the season.
Piper had the upper hand, but McPherson was not too far away as the Bullpups trailed as high as seven points and trailed 31-25 at halftime.
The Bullpups had a bigger challenge, guarding Piper’s star junior, Tamar Bates. The Bullpups were able to defend Bates well ever since his one-handed dunk in the first quarter but eventually the D-1 talent came through in fourth as he finished with 15 points. Unfortunately, Bates was the least of McPherson’s worries. The Pirates were filled with lengthy players that gave McPherson a hard time for most of the game. Ty Shelley was Piper’s top scorer with 17 points.
McPherson fell apart late in the third quarter as the Pirates outscored the Bullpups 24-12. Once the game hit the seven-minute mark, the Bullpups were down by 20. There was no turning back afterward.
Three Bullpups were able to finish in double figures. Seth Madron led the Bullpups with 15 points. Cooper Courtney added 12 and Eli Pyle 10.
McPherson will be back on the court next Friday to take on Circle High School at 7:30 p.m.
McPherson: Seth Madron 15 pts, Cooper Courtney 12 pts, Eli Pyle 10 pts. Cody Stufflbean 9 pts, Sam Pyle 6 pts, Hayes Schmid 5 pts., Jayton Alexander 2 pts.
