OTTAWA – The McPherson College women’s basketball team wrapped up the first half of the KCAC schedule with a 71-57 loss on the road against Ottawa University.
It was a close game for three quarters. The Braves led by one after the opening 10 minutes of action 17-6 and then extended the lead to five points at the halftime intermission, 33-28. In the third quarter, the Bulldogs came alive and outscored the Braves 18-6 in the period, and turned a five-point deficit into a seven-point lead with 10 minutes remaining.
In the fourth quarter, the wheels came off the bus for the Bulldogs. The Braves regrouped after their abysmal showing in the third, and erupted for 32 points in the final quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs by 21, to win by a comfortable 14 point margin.
Though they dominated the glass, outrebounding the Braves 47 to 33, the Bulldogs once again struggled taking care of the ball, coughing it up 29 times leading to 26 points by Ottawa. The Braves also had the edge in three-point shooting, knocking in eight shots from deep while the Bulldogs managed only four.
The Mac ladies squandered another stellar performance from Brittany Roberts, who recorded her 14th double-double of the season with 27 points and 15 rebounds. The Braves didn’t have an answer for Roberts down low. She either got wide-open looks, or was fouled in the attempt. She finished the night 8 of 15 from the floor, but was impressive from the charity stripe, making 11 of 13 of her attempts. The only other Bulldog close to double digits in scoring was Britney Jarvis with seven.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 9-9 overall, and 5-7 in KCAC play. They will have to regroup quickly as they will host intra-county rival Bethany College at the Sports Center on Wednesday night. Tip-off between the Bulldogs and Swedes is set for 6 p.m.
