EL DORADO — It may not be great shooting performance by the McPherson High School girls basketball team, but the defense couldn’t be beaten. The Lady Pups blew out El Dorado High School 52-22, improving to 9-0 on the season, and 4-0 in the AVCTL Division-III League play.

The Bullpups struggled to make the shots they usually would make consistently. In the first half, the Lady Pups only made two 3s out of 15 attempts. Overall, McPherson was 4 for 28 from behind the arc and was 16 for 58 on the field. According to Head Coach Chris Strathman, things weren’t right because of the inclement weather, which made the school closed on the day McPherson left to El Dorado.

“I just didn’t think we were very alert and focused,” Strathman said. “The girls said they felt like it was a Saturday and just a weird day. Normally on a Saturday, like our tournament, we’d have a shoot-around, well we didn’t have one today or this morning of course with the ice. In hindsight, I guess we could’ve at least had the varsity and shoot before we hopped on the bus.”

McPherson’s sharpshooter Grace Pyle went 0 for 8 from the three-point line and got into foul trouble early which kept her on the bench. Pyle still managed to finish with eight points. Kassidy Beam only made one three-pointer but led the Bullpups with 15 points.

The defense remained superior as they created pressure and forced turnovers by each of El Dorado’s’ possession. El Dorado only made 12 of their shots and the Bullpups had a comfortable 26-9 lead at halftime.

Despite the poor shooting, the Bullpups remained aggressive by attacking the ball inside, making their layups and putting themselves at the foul line led by Cassie Cooks, who finished with 14 points. The Bullpups were 16 for 22 at the free-throw line. By the end of the third quarter, the Bullpups were ahead 42-17, and the running clock began in the fourth.

“I thought our effort was really good,” Strathman said. “Our focus was in and out a bit but that sometimes leads to poor shooting too if the focus wasn’t razor-sharp,”

The Lady Pups will have a makeup game with Circle High School on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Final Stats:

McPherson: Kassidy Beam 15  pts., Cassie Cooks 14 pts., Grace Pyle 8 pts. Lakyn Schieferecke 6  pts., Ella Schmid 5 pts., Lauren Labertew 3 pts., Harper Smith 1 pts.
