McPherson College Interim Athletics Director Chandler Short announced that Rafael Bulnes resigned as the head coach of the Bulldog tennis programs.

Bulnes, a 2016 graduate of McPherson College and a former NAIA All-American for the Bulldogs, came back to coach at his alma mater in 2018. He immediately bolstered both programs’ rosters, and in his first season at the helm, guided both teams to KCAC conference tournament championships earning a spot in the field at the NAIA national championships. The 2018-19 men finished the season ranked 25th in the final NAIA rankings and the women’s team received votes.

The athletic administration will begin a national search for a tennis coach later this week. In the interim, Jeremy Nelson, assistant athletics director for athletic communications, will step in to fill the void this spring.

“I thank Coach Bulnes for his hard work and dedication to the tennis program, and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” Short said. “We are excited for Jeremy’s support in the interim. He brings a wealth of knowledge that will be a great addition to these successful programs on and off the court.”
