While the McPherson High School boys basketball team is hosting the McPherson Invitational this weekend, the girls have a score to settle in Towanda. This Friday, the Lady Pups will face Circle High School as a make-up game after it was postponed.

The Circle game was originally scheduled for Jan. 10 but was canceled due to inclement weather. For Head Coach Chris Strathman, it is a sign of relief to have it schedule a week before the Mid-America Classic.

“I’m glad that is on Friday because it does break up that big two-week gap that we were going to have,” Strathman said. “I wanted to play that Friday but the way it worked out is perfectly fine.”

McPherson is coming off an poor shooting performance last week at El Dorado High School. McPherson shot 6 for 36 from the field, and 4 for 28 from the three-point line, but still pulled away with 52-22 win.

The Lady Thunderbirds are coming off a 62-34 win over Wellington High School on Tuesday, and are also 9-0 (4-0 in league) on the season. Circle is led by Kimalee Cook and Mallory Cowman. Cook averages 16.5 points a game and 4.1 steals a game. Cowman, at 6-foot-2 averages 12.6 a game. She will be playing volleyball at Butler Community College next fall.  A road win at Circle will put McPherson ahead in the AVCTL Division III League Standings as both are the remaining undefeated teams.

“It’s going to be a big game for us,” Strathman said. “Obviously, Circle is going to be the main challenger for league and they are always a good team. ”
