TOWANDA— The McPherson High School boys basketball team had a score to settle with Circle High School on Tuesday before taking a week off. The Bullpups took care of business over the Thunderbirds with 69-53 win, improving 9-0 on the season and 5-0 in the AVCTL Division-III league. McPherson also extends its winning streak to three.
In a make-up game, McPherson had an offensive night against the Thunderbirds. Four Bullpups finished in double figures and McPherson shot 27 for 53 from the field. Seth Madron and Cody Stufflebean tied for 17 points, while Jayton Alexander and Hayes Schmid tied for 11.
“We got some stuff in transition and got some follow shots,” Head Coach Kurt Kinnamon said. “That’s a team we’re bigger then so we ought to be able to get some stuff inside and we did a nice job of that.”
After low-scoring 12-9 lead, the Bullpups dominated in the second quarter as they put 27 points over Circle’s 15. Both Schmid and Madron kept the offense going as they combined for 22 points in the first half. Schmid knocked three triples while Madron showed his athleticism as he attacked the basket.
In the third quarter, the Bullpups attacked the basket more by feeding their big man Stufflebean inside the paint. After only settling for four points in the first half, he finished the night with 17 points. McPherson’s offense added 21 more points in the fourth quarter to close the deal on the T-Birds.
“I think we did a nice job running some nice sets and really did a good job moving the ball side-to-side,” Kinnamon said. “When they fronted Cody (Stufflebean), we did a good job giving him the ball over the top.”
The Bullpups will have a week off before they travel to Wichita Collegiate High School at 7:30 p.m.
