A McPherson chapter of the cancer support group organization Victory in the Valley Inc. is starting up in McPherson. Their first meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 17 and every third Monday of the month after. The meetings will take place at the Cedars Courts, 1071 Darlow Drive. The support group is for survivors, patients, family members and friends
Victory in the Valley is an unaffiliated non-profit cancer support organization. They do not receive funds from national cancer organizations. Therefore all donations the chapter may receive, will stay in McPherson County. The organization provides services for those fighting cancer through support groups, wigs, hats and turbans, patient assistance to include transportation, fuel, lodging, food and prescriptions and a Women’s Weekend retreat for any patient of survivor.
The organizations start came in 1982, when Lois Thomi was diagnosed with breast cancer. She felt a turmoil of emotions throughout the difficult months of treatment and recovery, when another patient offered up words of encouragement. This was the catalyst for her founding the group in 1983 along with her daughter.
In 1986 the Lodge at Victory in the Valley in Wichita was purchased to provide lodging for those receiving medical treatment in Wichita. In 2007 lodging assistance was also established at Hotel At Waterwalk, 316 Hotel, and Wesley Inn, with a referral from the cancer patient’s oncologist.
Since its inception the organization has expanded to help people in more than 350 cities in Kansas. It has provided more than 96,000 support contacts. Services are provided at no charge due to the generosity the group has received.
