McPHERSON, KAN. – An ensemble cast from the McPherson College theatre department will perform the world premiere of “Creepy! Creepy!” to McPherson elementary school audiences February 18-21 in Brown Auditorium.
Based on award-winning books “Creepy Carrots” and “Creepy Pair of Underwear” by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Peter Brown with stage adaptation by Oliver Bowman, the plot follows Jasper Rabbit as he learns that not everything is as he first hopes after consuming carrots non-stop and buying new cool underwear that haunts his dreams. The book “Creepy Carrots” won a Caldecott Medal honor in 2013.
“We were so honored when Aaron Reynolds agreed to give McPherson College the exclusive rights to adapt his books for the stage,” Jd. Bowman, professor of theatre, said. “Working on a new work is quite challenging for actors because they cannot just Google how it’s been done before. They have to conceive everything from the characters to how the ensemble works together to tell this story.”
The McPherson College theatre department has been staging children’s theatre productions for 18 years beginning in 1996 until 2005 and then every other year. The college invites local elementary students to campus to experience the live theatre performance in addition to the evening performances for the public.
“This year’s performance is not only an exciting story for our elementary school audiences but it is also an amazing learning experience for the college students,” Bowman said.
The ensemble cast includes Cali Godwin, Sheresa Layton, Tony Carpenter, Dani Wilcock, Grace van Asselt, Lindy Reynolds, and features Eli Jordan as Jasper Rabbit.
The show plays for elementary schools on February 18-21 at 1 p.m. and for the public on February 21-22 at 7:30 p.m. All seats are $5 and tickets are available at the box office prior to the performance.
Season ticket holders receive a themed meal prior to each of the season’s performances. For more information about season tickets or to make a reservation, contact the box office at (620) 242-0444 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
