This week is National Work Zone Awareness Week. In McPherson, our street crews have many ongoing projects to continue the improvements to our streets. The major projects include the Hartup Street/Elizabeth Street Reconstruction, the Grimes Street/Anna Street Reconstruction, the Plaza East Place Reconstruction, Champlin Street Extension and the Hulse Drainage Project. There are two Standard Traffic Ordinances (STOs) to highlight regarding work zone safety.
STO 62 on Highway Construction and Maintenance states: the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to any authorized vehicle or pedestrian actually engaged in work upon a highway within any road construction zone, indicated by official traffic-control devices.
STO 62 continued, If the driver of the motor vehicle is traveling on a highway that consists of at least two lanes that carry traffic in the same direction of travel as that of the driver’s motor vehicle, the driver shall proceed with due caution and, if possible and with due regard to the road, weather, and traffic conditions, shall change lanes into a lane that is not adjacent to that of the stationary authorized vehicle.
STO 204, on Fines Doubled in Road Construction Zones states: fines listed in the schedule of fines, as established by the municipal court judge, shall be doubled if a person is convicted of an ordinance traffic infraction, which is defined as a moving violation in accordance with rules and regulations adopted pursuant to K.S.A. 8-249, and amendments thereto, committed within any road construction zone.
Please be safe and attentive as you navigate the streets of McPherson and highways of Kansas.
Thank you to all of the Road Work personnel!
