Obituary: Larry Atkinson


Larry Neal Atkinson, 66, of Mcpherson, Kansas, passed away at 12:43 p.m., Monday, September 14th, 2020 peacefully at Hospice House, Hutchinson, Kansas.

Larry was born in McPherson, Kansas on February 27, 1954, a son of Charles Cornelius and Minnie Elizabeth (Chalmers) Atkinson.

Larry attended Lincoln Elementary School, Park School, McPherson Junior High School and graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson, Kansas in 1972. He then attended Hutchinson Junior College, Hutchinson, Kansas.

He was baptized into the Christian faith at the  First Methodist Church McPherson.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

Through the years Larry worked as a police officer, firefighter, chimney sweep business owner, and nurse all in McPherson, Kansas, he was also a security guard for the Wichita Eagle Beacon, Wichita, Kansas.

Larry was a member of  The American Legion Post 24 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715.

Larry enjoyed fishing, woodworking, being Larry the Clown and Scootin Larry during the May Day Parade, traveling to more than 23 foreign countries, and spending time with his friends and family.

He is survived by his mother, Minnie Atkinson, of McPherson, Kansas and his sister Connie Bunn and her husband Thomas, of Canton, Kansas.

Larry was preceded in death by his father.

Private Graveside Service will be held at the McPherson Cemetery, McPherson, Kansas. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 24 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715.
