Police Address Riding in Bed of Trucks

Riding in the bed of a pick-up truck may seem convenient, but it is very dangerous. The bed of a pick-up truck does not offer the same protections as the passenger compartment, such as seat belts and airbags. Riding in the back of a pick-up is also a violation of traffic laws.

According to Standard Traffic Ordinance (STO) Sec. 115 and 182.2 Unlawful Riding on Vehicles; Persons of any age states:

  1. It shall be unlawful for any person to ride on any vehicle or upon any portion thereof not designed or intended for use of passengers when the vehicle is in motion.
  2. It shall be unlawful for the operator of any vehicle to allow any person to ride on any vehicle or upon any portion thereof not designated or intended for the use of passengers when the vehicle is in motion.

Before you or your passengers ride in the back of a pick-up truck, no matter the distance, take a second to think about what could happen if you are involved in a traffic accident. Injury or death can occur while being unrestrained when the vehicle is in motion.
