Texas Governor Greg Abbott faced criticism over the busing of migrants to sanctuary cities while attending a Republican gala in New York City on Thursday.
Texas officials recently released new data in March, revealing that the state has transported over 105,000 migrants since 2022. This pressing issue took center stage at the event held on Thursday.
According to Governor Abbott, when the bussing operation started, it was initially directed towards a single location. This deliberate choice was made because, as Abbott pointed out, neither Joe Biden nor the border czar had personally visited the border to witness the resulting chaos.
Abbott, a potential vice president candidate in the upcoming presidential election, wasted no time addressing the issue of increasing migrant arrivals in the country.
“We were only sending them to Washington, D.C., and Mayor Adams suddenly starts criticizing me for sending them to New York City,” Abbott revealed. “It caught me off guard, but eventually I realized that if I’m going to receive criticism, I might as well take credit for it too.”
According to data from the state of Texas, authorities have transported more than 105,000 migrants to sanctuary cities since August 2022. This includes approximately 39,000 migrants who were bussed to New York. In fact, this accounts for over 20% of the total number of migrants who have arrived in New York City since last spring.
Mayor Eric Adams announced on Thursday that he plans to extend an invitation to the creator of the Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Centers. The purpose of this invitation is to provide the creator with an opportunity to witness firsthand the impact of their creation and gain a deeper understanding of the compassionate and respectful treatment being offered to individuals in need. By offering a stay at one of these centers, Mayor Adams aims to emphasize the importance of treating all individuals with the dignity they deserve.
The mayor openly accuses Abbott of shifting the responsibility of the migrant crisis onto other cities.
Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Hilton Hotel, where the fundraiser took place.
“We are protesting against the entire GOP,” stated Luba Cortes, representative of Make the Road NY. She emphasized the unity of communities, who are determined to affirm that immigrants should not be treated as mere political tools.”
City officials have stated that Abbott’s team has not responded to any calls from the Adams administration since they sent migrants to New York City.
