A doctor specializing in performing abortions has announced their candidacy as the first Democratic candidate in Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District. This comes as Republican Representative Mike Gallagher unexpectedly announced his retirement, leaving the seat open for competition.

Dr. Kristin Lyerly, an obstetrician and gynecologist, announced her candidacy just two weeks before Gallagher’s anticipated departure. Given the timing of his resignation, there won’t be a need for a special election.

At present, Lyerly remains unchallenged in the Democratic primary set to be determined on August 13. The Democratic party did not put forward any candidates for the 2022 election.

Two Republicans, state Sen. Andre Jacque and former state Sen. Roger Roth, have declared their candidacy for the upcoming race. Additionally, a third Republican is anticipated to join the race next week. Republican consultant Alex Bruesewitz, who is currently residing in Florida, is expected to make an official announcement on Monday. However, in order to run for the seat, Bruesewitz would need to relocate back to Wisconsin.

Lyerly emphasized that she intended to prioritize the topic of abortion in the campaign.

Lyerly, being one of the plaintiffs in a Wisconsin lawsuit, played a crucial role in preserving the legality of abortions following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022. Throughout Wisconsin, she dedicated herself to performing abortions, but due to the court’s ruling, she relocated her practice temporarily to Minnesota.

Dr. Lyerly, an OB/GYN, expressed her personal experience with MAGA extremists who are actively opposing a woman’s autonomy in making her own health decisions. In her statement, she emphasizes her unwavering commitment to guaranteeing every woman in their state has access to comprehensive reproductive care. This includes not only safe and legal abortions but also vital services like maternity care and mental health support.

The executive director of Wisconsin Right to Life expressed criticism towards Lyerly’s decision to enter the race, emphasizing the importance of having elected officials who prioritize the protection of all life.

Gallagher served northeast Wisconsin for four consecutive terms before stepping down. With his sudden departure, Republicans now hold a slim majority of 217-213 in the House, leaving little room for error in party-line votes.

Gallagher faced opposition from former President Donald Trump and his supporters, and he further upset fellow Republicans when he declined to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas last month.

Jacque, Roth, and Bruesewitz, all staunch supporters of President Trump, vehemently oppose the practice of abortion.

The district has a strong Republican base, but Democrats are determined to make it a competitive race.

In the 2020 election, President Trump emerged victorious in the district with a significant lead of 16 percentage points. Although he narrowly lost the state to President Joe Biden by less than a point, Congressman Gallagher has consistently secured reelection with impressive margins, never falling below a 25-point advantage. Encompassing the cities of Appleton and Green Bay, along with Door County and predominantly rural areas extending north through Marinette, the district boasts a diverse geographical composition.
