The Simonds family revealed that 11-year-old Katelynn Simonds, who tragically lost her life in a house fire in Spalding County, was bravely attempting to rescue her beloved dog when she became trapped inside.
During an interview with Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco, Tressia Perry, her step-aunt, relayed her mother’s message on WSB Tonight at 11 p.m.
“It’s truly heartbreaking,” expressed Perry.
Spalding County Fire Chief Mike Byrd stated that his team was alerted for assistance shortly before 5:30 pm on Saturday evening.
Byrd recalled that when they received the call, the situation was already quite serious. The incident was so significant that it could be seen from a distance of more than a mile.
Rescuers were aware that someone was trapped inside and wasted no time in commencing their search upon arrival. They managed to locate the little girl on the upper floor, but unfortunately, their efforts came too late to save her.
Perry explained that despite the best efforts of her step-dad and step-uncle, they were unable to enter and find her.
According to Perry, the little girl resided at the residence on Sidney Dr. along with her mother, step-father, and brother.
During her time in school, she attended Cowan Road Middle School where she actively participated in cheering for both Spalding and Pike County Rec Centers.
Perry expressed concern for the family, acknowledging that they are currently facing difficult circumstances.
