Imagine the surprise of a family who believed they had two female guinea pigs, only to discover a surprise addition to their furry family in the form of a baby guinea pig.
Mady, a resident of Texas, garnered over 4 million views on her TikTok video showcasing the moment she stumbled upon an unexpected surprise. As she approached the cage, a tiny guinea pig unexpectedly hopped out from a gap, prompting her to exclaim, “Wait a minute! There’s another guinea pig. Who had a baby?”
Mady first saved a guinea pig called Jessie from a neglectful situation on Christmas Eve. However, Mady soon discovered that Jessie was not the female guinea pig they had anticipated. It turns out that the rescue organization had made a mistake, and Mady had no reason to question their judgment.
“I never thought to double-check Jessie’s gender,” Mady shared with Newsweek. “Some males have very obvious external parts, but Jessie didn’t. I only discovered that he was a boy when I went to clean out the cage and found their baby.”
Female guinea pigs can become sexually mature as early as one month old, but it is recommended to wait until they are at least 3-7 months old before breeding them.
Guinea pigs have a remarkable ability to breed and give birth rapidly. Their gestation period is a mere 2 months, and astonishingly, they can go into heat and become pregnant again just 15 hours after giving birth.
The adorable new baby, lovingly named “Jessie junior,” currently resides in a cage with his father. However, Mady’s delightful surprises didn’t stop there. She soon discovered that the mother guinea pig might be expecting another litter, as she had been unaware of her initial pregnancy.
“We’re keeping a close eye on her to see if she’ll have more babies,” Mady explained. “Our hope is that at least one of them will be a female, so she can have a companion. In case she has all male babies or isn’t pregnant, we’ll make sure to get her a friend from the pet store, and we’ll double-check their gender to avoid any surprises!”
Mady is also prioritizing responsible pet ownership by taking necessary measures to ensure the well-being of all their furry family members. Since identifying the mother, the parents have been separated, and plans are in motion to provide larger accommodations for their growing brood.
In the comment section of TikTok, numerous individuals expressed their reactions. One viewer sarcastically remarked, “Well, well, well, what a surprise.”
One person shared their experience, recalling, “Oh my gosh, this actually happened to my mom and me back in the early 90s. We ended up with about 20 guinea pigs for a solid 10 years after it happened a second time.”
