A 17-year-old has been charged as an adult for his involvement in a shooting that took place in downtown Indianapolis last month. The incident resulted in the injury of seven minors, aged between 12 and 17. Authorities made this announcement on Tuesday.
King Dennis is now facing charges in adult court, which include a misdemeanor charge of dangerous possession of a firearm, as well as two felony counts of criminal recklessness. The shooting that took place on March 30th is at the center of these charges. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears explained that Dennis’ previous conviction relating to firearms, along with the severity of the shooting incident and state law, led to the decision to transfer the case to adult court.
Prosecutors have expressed concerns about the “physical safety of another person or the community” and have requested a higher bond in the case. They are also seeking GPS monitoring for the teenager. Furthermore, prosecutors have asked the court to impose a restraining order prohibiting Dennis from entering within a six-block radius of the shooting’s location.
“I am grateful to the investigators for bringing us to this stage, but it is important to recognize that this is just the beginning. The matter is still under investigation,” Mears expressed. “We are committed to following up on leads and gathering information until all individuals responsible for their actions are held responsible.”
Authorities have previously stated that the shooting was a result of an ongoing feud between groups. Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on March 30, police officers on patrol in downtown Indianapolis heard shots fired.
According to Deputy Chief Tanya Terry of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, a significant number of young individuals were found by the responding officers. Among them, six had been shot and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Later on, a seventh victim also arrived at a hospital in the area.
Seven victims were involved in the incident, including two 16-year-old boys, one 16-year-old girl, three 14-year-old girls, and one 12-year-old boy. Fortunately, all of them sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The city’s battle against increasing youth violence gained national attention following the shooting incident. Additionally, the incident led the police to take action in enforcing the state’s curfew law.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Christopher Bailey recently made an announcement regarding the enforcement of Indiana’s curfew law for minors. According to the law, children under the age of 15 are not permitted to be in public places between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. on any day.
Before the curfew takes effect, officers will use the public address systems on their patrol cars to make announcements. They will then follow up with another announcement to inform everyone that the curfew is now in effect. If any minors are found violating the curfew, officers have the authority to take them to a safe location specifically designated for this purpose. They will then proceed to notify the minor’s parent or guardian about the incident.
“The behavior we witnessed on March 30 will not be tolerated,” Bailey asserted in a recent statement. “As responsible parents, adults, and members of law enforcement, it is our utmost responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of our children, preventing them from falling into trouble and keeping them away from potential harm.”
