DUI charges filed after fatal crash

A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 55 when a pickup truck veered off the road and collided with a vehicle, resulting in the death of a Marine veteran. The crash occurred as several individuals were in the process of changing a tire. Sadly, Nikolas Hutto, one of the individuals involved, was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the pickup truck, Octavio Chavez, sustained minor injuries in the accident. However, he now faces charges of aggravated DUI involving death. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of driving under the influence.

SIU takes a stand on tuition rates

In a much-welcomed move, the Southern Illinois University (SIU) System has decided not to raise undergraduate tuition rates for the 2024-2025 school year at its Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses. The SIU Board of Trustees made this decision during a meeting held in Carbondale on Thursday. This freeze marks the seventh consecutive year that the SIU System has refrained from increasing undergraduate tuition rates, providing financial relief to students and their families.

Promoting agrichemical recycling

The Illinois Department of Agriculture is actively encouraging farmers and agrichemical facilities to participate in a free agrichemical container recycling program. Starting in mid-July and continuing through August, designated collection sites across the state will accept high-density, No. 2 plastic agrichemical containers that are clean and dry. These containers will be recycled to produce shipping pallets.

Participants in the program must ensure that all caps, valves, metal, labels, and foil seals are removed from the containers. Additionally, for plastic drums, the top and bottom must be cut off, and the side of the drum should be cut from top to bottom. By actively engaging in this recycling initiative, farmers and agrichemical facilities can contribute to a more sustainable future.
