Small, 50, and his wife, La’Quetta Small, were charged on Monday with endangering the welfare of a child. They are also accused of committing a disorderly persons offense, specifically, simple assault. Additionally, the mayor faces charges of making terrorist threats and aggravated assault.
The girl reportedly experienced the abuse when she was 15 and 16 years old.
During a news conference on April 1, Mayor Marty Small denied any wrongdoing in response to the search of his home by the police on March 28. He firmly asserted, “We have done nothing wrong.” Small emphasized that the prosecutor’s office had been conducting a months-long investigation, which he clarified was centered around “a family matter.”
Marty Small, along with his wife, daughter, and son, were present at the news conference. Unfortunately, the Smalls could not be contacted for comment on Monday.
Marty Small held a news conference following the charging of Constance “Mandy” Days-Chapman, the principal of Atlantic City High School. Days-Chapman was accused of not reporting to the appropriate authorities when a student had disclosed abuse taking place in their home.
Days-Chapman, instead, approached the student’s parents, according to the prosecutor’s office. The mayor revealed at the news conference that Days-Chapman not only oversaw Small’s mayoral campaign but is also a trusted friend.
The mayor did not confirm that the student who reported abuse was his daughter, who is a student at Atlantic City High School. However, he expressed his support for Days-Chapman, who serves as the chair of the Atlantic City Democratic Committee.
During the news conference, he reassured, “You have done absolutely nothing wrong.”
